On that day, I visited the village of Timbulsloko in Demak, which was severely affected by tidal flooding. Coinciding with Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations, the villagers conducted a ceremony amidst the floodwaters, showcasing a mix of resilience and sorrow. Despite the challenging conditions, the community gathered to express their hopes for both their village and the nation through heartfelt speeches. The atmosphere was a poignant reminder of their determination to persevere in the face of adversity, as they celebrated their independence while grappling with the realities of living in a flood-prone area.
